The Acropolis is the epicenter of Greek history. Located on top of a rocky hill in the middle of Athens, it looks over the entire city of Athens. The Acropolis was first built 4000 BC and today is still preserved for tourism. The Acropolis was erected as a temple and was a place of worship for ancient Greeks.The Acropolis is one of the most famous historical sights in the world, for both its age and significance.The columns displayed on the Acropolis structures is the beginnings of the Greco-Roman architectural movement used throughout the history and still used today.
The Parthenon is the most famous sight, and is located front and center on the hill and was dedicated to the God Athena.
Getting to the acropolis is a bit of a hike and you purchase tickets just outside of the monument. Athens is unbelievably hot during the summer, and the Acropolis has little to no shade. Despite the crowds and heat, this place is well worth the travel. There is really no feeling like standing on top of that hill, overlooking Athens, and being centered in such a historically significant place.
The Erechtheion is located a few hundred feet from the Parthenon, and is similar in design and history.
The Panathenaic Stadium is built entirely out of marble on the side of the Acropolis and was used for many communal events throughout Greek history.
The Propylaia is the gateway into the Acropolis.
