Some of Phuket is quite touristy, but when you drive out to different parts of the island, it feels like a completely different world. Inland and coastal life in Thailand is extremely different. The coasts of Phuket are picturesque with clear water, white sand beaches, and stunning rock formations. However, inland Phuket is a much different picture. Flying into Phuket, it seems like one of the most luxurious spots in the world. From the plane window you see the green mountains, bright water, and scattered islands. When you leave the airport, it is a much different reality. Although absolutely beautiful in landscape, you don’t see from the plane window what life is really like living in a Thai city.
City life in Phuket is a little rough, to say the least. Much of the island is a jumble of poorly built and maintained streets, houses, and buildings. Litter is scattered on the sides of the roads, which is so shameful given it’s natural beauty. Temples and shrines are located throughout the island, that hold a special type of beauty. But, I was intrigued by everything. The people live quite simple lives, yet our some of the happiest people I have ever met. It was really eye-opening to see this whole new world – unlike anything I have ever seen in the U.S – and experience a whole new culture. I feel like this experience is something everyone should aim to feel at least once.
