Pompeii, located on a hill just outside of the city of Naples, is one of the most preserved historical sites in the world. Pompeii was an ancient Roman city that was buried during a volcano (or as the Italians call it “vesuvio”) eruption in 79 A.D. This ancient city was then rediscovered in an archeological dig centuries later. Archeologists today continue to further unearth the history of this ancient community.
We toured Pompeii on our way out of the Amalfi Coast. Pompeii is large, however is completely walkable. We spent 2 hours inside the ancient city and was enough time to get a grasp of the history and architecture. I have learned about Pompeii over the course of my education, so it was surreal to see it in real life.
The preservation of the buildings and art from so many centuries ago is unbelievable. Archeologists have sanctioned off an area where you can see the artifacts that there excavated, including the bodies of those buried alive. Pompeii has many little details, and there are so many houses, hallways, and gardens to explore.
